254 Miles of True Grit
Hi Folks! We are so glad you have decided to follow the path that Mattie Ross described in her travels to Fort Smith and onward into Oklahoma with that gun-slinging, boozy Rooster Cogburn. Arkansas named this trail in her honor because that young gal demonstrated "True Grit" in her determination to obtain justice for her murdered father. Most of you have either read the story written by Charles Portis or have seen the movies that describe her travels. (I like that original story with my favorite John Wayne and Arkansas’s on Glen Campbell but either one is entertaining). So, drive along and check out the towns and attractions.—Curtis Varnell

The Yell County Historical Society invited four students from the East Lab program at Dardanelle High School—Michael Finkenbinder, Ryan Knight, Diego Hernandez and Robert Keech—to research Portis’s book and create a map of the trail based on locations from the story to present-day locations.
